Tips to Grow a Large Email List

Want to know what I’ve learned from writing three “successful” blogs and dozens of smaller efforts?
Out of everything I’ve done to build my blogs, one stands out as the most powerful by far: email lists.
Nothing is as potent as a large, targeted, responsive email list of engaged followers.
But how do you build that list?
If you’re like me, you probably spent years with a little “subscribe to my blog” form sitting quietly on your sidebar.  And it probably converts .001% of your visitors.
Once I saw the potential of email lists, I quickly realized I needed to build my list faster than that, so I spent years testing all the different possibilities.

The three key ingredients of a large email list

Big, scary goals become achievable when you break them into their composite parts.
So, what is actually required to “grow a massive email list”?
Quite simply, you need three things:
  1. Targeted people visiting your website
  2. High conversion from visitor to subscriber
  3. Subscribers who love your site so much they tell their friends
That’s it.
Growing your email list doesn’t require some lucky break or some magic potion.  You just need to steadily improve these three levers.
Here are six key techniques and tips to grow a large email list, that will help you see immediate growth.

1. Turn your homepage into a massive subscribe form

How many people see your homepage?
I just pulled up Google Analytics for my blog, and it looks like my homepage is the third most popular page for this last month.
That means my blog’s homepage gets as many visitors as my most popular posts!
What have you done to optimize your homepage for new readers?
Andrew Chen, a Silicon Valley marketing genius, realized this opportunity years ago, and he transformed his blog homepage into a massive email form plus an introduction to his most valuable posts.
6 Simple Tips to Grow a Large Email List
Others have since tried the same technique, and there’s even a homepage email collect WordPress plugin that makes it easy to do it yourself.

2. Use a non-annoying popover

When I first started my latest blog, I spent the first couple months writing amazing content.
With a great group of friends to help promote my content, I routinely drove 1-3k visitors to my new posts, but very few of those visitors actually joined my email list.
That’s because the only way to join my email list was through a small form on my sidebar.
Most visitors probably never even noticed it.
Since I knew I needed to build a large email list, I started testing out a few other tools to boost my conversion from visitor to subscriber.
That’s when I discovered List Builder by SumoMe. Totally free.
With very little setup, this free popover plugin now gives me a 4% to 5% conversion rate from visitor to subscriber!
I simply installed the code snippet, edited the wording and coloring, and, wah lah, my email list started growing.
This is what my popover looks like.

Popovers work extraordinarily well because they grab your readers’ attention much better than a sidebar signup or even a homepage form.

3. Give amazing value in your writing

Seems cliche, right?
But the vast majority of blogs fail to meet this entry level requirement.
So how can you write stunning content that over delivers in a fun package?
Here’s the secret formula for writing epic posts:
  1. Draft a cleanly structured outline
  2. Fill it with stories and statistics
  3. Rigorously prune 50% of the words
  4. Add 20% more value (ie, stories and statistics)
  5. Scientifically craft a snappy headline. Most successful posts are around 2,000 words.
  6. Publish and repeat
Simply put, write articles you would be excited to read.
I love Tim Ferriss’ blog because it’s filled with uber practical posts like this.
6 Simple Tips to Grow a Large Email List
Depending on your personal preference, you can write short, snappy posts (like Seth Godin) or long, detailed essays (like Paul Graham).
The writing process can be painful at times, but don’t sacrifice and publish a sloppy post.
I remember one particular post that just wasn’t coming together.  It was late on a Friday night, and I wanted to have it finished before the weekend.  Growing more and more frustrated, I continued banging my head against the keyboard until I fell asleep under my desk at 3am.
Ultimately that post became one of my most popular yet – but only after I rewrote everything I did that Friday night.  If things aren’t coming together, give yourself the freedom to simply delete and restart.

4. Create a strong incentive to subscribe

Think back over the dozens of subscription forms you’ve seen this week.  Chances are, most of them said something like “Get our latest posts!”.
Chances are also pretty good that you didn’t sign up.
If you want your email list to stand out (hint: you do), take the time to create a massively valuable subscription incentive.
6 Simple Tips to Grow a Large Email List
Here are a few incentives you can use for your email list:
  • Ebooks
  • Recordings
  • Cheatsheets
  • Videos
  • Email series
The best news is, you don’t even have to spend a lot of time slaving over your giveaway!
Simply take something you’ve already written and edit it as needed to transform it into something else!
For instance, if you have a really long, detailed blog post, you can turn it into a valuable ebook by simply editing it into the right format and adding a bit more information.
Bonus tip: Noah Kagan has recently found a lot of success by creating article-specific incentives.  For instance, on a recent post about data mining, he gave away the exact spreadsheet using a LeadBox.

5. A/B test key elements

Conversion rate testing is only for big companies selling expensive products, right?
Actually, A/B testing can be a powerful yet simple tool to help you grow your email list much faster!
Say about 5% of your visitors currently subscribe (that’s a fairly average rate).  For every 1,000 visitors, you’ll see about 50 new email subscribers. (1,000 x 5% = 50)
Now, say you’re able to increase that conversion to just 7% with testing (conservatively realistic). (1,000 x 7% = 70)
Suddenly, that same batch of visitors gives you 70 subscribers – that’s 20 extra people who have joined your blog community!
Does A/B testing require you to hold a PhD in statistics or be a real-life hacker?
Not at all.  WIth the testing platforms available today, you can easily run A/B tests without ever editing a line of code.
Just use something like Optimizely (for general testing) or KingSumo (for headlines).
6 Simple Tips to Grow a Large Email List
Inside Optimizely: I just select a region and edit the text
Within your platform of choice, simply create a couple variations to try and create a goal (usually either a button click or a “thanks for subscribing” page load.
Once the test finishes (make sure to achieve statistical significance!), create a new variation and continue improving on each new design.
You’ll probably want to focus on testing:
  • Headlines
  • Words (if any)
  • Incentive
  • Pictures
  • “Subscribe” button text

 6. Build relationships with your current subscribers

So you’ve written amazing content, A/B tested your headlines, and designed massively valuable incentives.
Dozens of new email subscribers eagerly run to join your list every day.
Time to declare success and stop working so hard, right?
Actually, the real work has just begun.
Numbers on your newsletter statistics page are just that.  You can’t build a vibrant community on a stack of dry email addresses.
Each new subscriber is like a conference goer at a tradeshow booth.  You’ve got their attention – now you need to keep it.
Out of all the thousands of email lists I’ve joined, only one remains forever etched into my memory.
6 Simple Tips to Grow a Large Email List
Derek Sivers transformed me from an email subscriber to a true fan.
Sometime in 2011 (I can’t find the original email), I subscribed to Derek Siver’s email list (the founder of CD Baby).  I can’t remember whether his first email was a personal welcome email or an automated welcome email.  Either way it was enough to get me to reply, and we exchanged a couple emails.
Suddenly, I wasn’t just subscribed to a blog I enjoyed – I was following a person I respected.
Three years later, I’m still excited to see his latest posts, and that personal touch has left me with an emotional connection to his blog.
Whether you create an automated email flow packed with world-changing information or personally greet each new follower, find some way to make your emails essential.
Your readers shouldn’t just read your emails, they should be excited to see your name in their inbox.

Start with something

This post is chock-full of tactics that will dramatically increase your email list, but with this many options, you’re at significant risk for a common ailment: analysis paralysis.
Don’t worry about doing everything perfectly.
Just take action.
Go do something (email one of your newest subscribers?) right now.
Just start today, and you can do more tomorrow.

Affiliate Marketing Without a Website.

Building a website is the most common way affiliates launch themselves into the affiliate marketing world, and if you're interested in creating a long-term business you'll inevitably need to put together a website.
Remember: the key with affiliate marketing is get your affiliate link in front of an interested audience - how you choose to do that is completely up to you! With that in mind, here are a few methods you could try:

#1: Post on blogs and forums

This is a really simple way of getting a taste for affiliate marketing - all you have to do is find a product you'd like to promote, then start posting on blogs and forums with your affiliate link in your signature.
Here's an example from our very own forum: you can see that both of these members have an affiliate link in their signatures. They're both pretty active and respected members of the forum.

Of course you should only post on blogs and forums where people would be interested in the product - you're not going to get many bites for a dog training affiliate product when you're posting on a classic car enthusiast forum.
Similarly, you’ll find that you have a lot more success if you're making useful and interesting posts and if you become a regular on the site; the two members above, for example, are active and respected members of our forum. Once you have established yourself people will begin to respect your opinion and will be more inclined to click on your link. If you simply spam a blog or forum with useless posts you’re likely to be banned and your posts deleted.

#2: Write a viral eBook or some other "viral" product

A “viral” product is one that is designed to spread (often quickly) to a great many people - this can be a great way of getting your affiliate links out there without ever having to create a website. You can produce a short 30-page eBook or a "special report" on a particular subject, insert links to affiliate products into it, then distribute your book through whatever means you like – you could tell people that they're welcome to give it away, sell it or put it on their websites. You can kick it off yourself by selling the eBook on eBay for a small amount.
If your book is informative and useful, rather than simply laden with affiliate ads, you might find that it spreads quite well.

#3: Write ads or reviews for classifieds websites

You're probably already familiar with using sites like Craigslist to look for old furniture or car parts, but you can also use classifieds sites to promote affiliate products. Consider writing ads or reviews for affiliate products and posting them with your affiliate link.
Some sites you might want to try are:

#4: Build a Squidoo lens

Building a Squidoo "lens" is a great way of getting started as an affiliate without needing to build your own website from scratch. A "lens" is like a 1-page mini website where you can talk about a subject you're passionate about (eg, your affiliate market and associated products!). It's hosted on the Squidoo site, and you don't need to know anything about web design to make it look fairly professional.
A Squidoo lens allows you to build a page on a topic, insert ads, reviews and other content as you please, all without having to write any HTML.
The best part, though, is that Squidoo is also part social-networking site, so simply by being on Squidoo you will begin to attract traffic interested in your topic and looking for recommendations. Squidoo is especially easy to monetize, and Squidoo lenses have tended in the past to do pretty well in the search engines.
To sign up and start creating your lens, visit Squidoo.com.

#5: Promote affiliate products directly through pay-per-click advertisements

We've left this method for last because, quite frankly, it's not one we recommend. This method involves creating pay-per-click campaigns through search engines like Google and Bing, and promoting the merchant website directly through your affiliate link.
So instead of using PPC to promote your own website, you send them straight to the merchant.
There are a number of downsides to this method.
  1. First, with Google's AdWords in particular, there will only be one paid listing for a particular website displayed at any given time. This means that instead of competing against other advertisers for one of eight spots on the page, you're competing for just one spot. If you bid a large amount and write an attractive ad then you might see your ad displayed, otherwise you can forget it.
  2. Secondly, you have no control over the quality of the merchant page. Increasingly the search engines are looking at the page you're promoting and deciding whether this offers a good experience for their users. If the merchant site has little content, or poor quality content, you could end up paying a much higher amount for your advertisements.
There are always new affiliates who see this as a fast and easy way to get started, but we really recommend that you try the other methods we've introduced first.

Lesson Summary:

In this lesson you’ve learned some ways of getting your affiliate link out in front of an audience without having to build a website, such as...
  • Posting on blogs and forums
  • Writing a viral eBook or some other "viral" product
  • Writing ads or reviews for classifieds websites
  • Building a Squidoo lens
  • Promoting affiliate products directly through pay-per-click advertisements

Affinity Marketing

Affinity marketing (also called partnership marketing) is an approach to marketing that involves multiple organizations forming a partnership to attract customers who may have an interest in what those organizations are selling.[1] The partnering organizations usually have some relation among their products such that a common target audience would be interested in product offerings among all the partners; such a relation or common target audience is termed an affinity. Affinity may also refer to the customer's feeling of affinity for one or more of the partnership's products or brands.[2] Affinity marketing programs have three parts: cross-endorsements among the partnering organizations, shared incentives for participation among the organizations and enhancement package of benefits for the customers.[3]
An example of an affinity marketing program would be a credit card company partnering with a professional sports team to place the team's logo on the credit card, team members endorsing the card, and an enhancement package consisting of bonus points earned going toward discounts on team events or merchandise.[3] The target audience would be people interested in the use of a credit card who like the team. The shared incentives would be more credit card usage and brand loyalty for the bank and more event and merchandise purchases for the sports team. The sports team may also receive a share of transaction volume on the cards.
Another example of affinity marketing is of a telecommunications service company partnering with an airline operator to offer discounts or bonuses on roaming plans for frequent flyers.[4]
In 2014, Dunkin' Brands announced a multi-year partnership with Liverpool F.C. to promote both brands together.[5][6]
In e-commerce, affinity marketing takes the form of sharing referrals among partners through banner ads, icons and hyperlinks.[2] Web search engines may participate in affinity marketing by selling links to keyword searches. Among the goals of e-commerce affinity marketing partnerships are to increase website visibility, increase website traffic and boost sales. Web-based affinity partnerships often attempt to improve affinity marketing by personalizing advertisements according to information learned about customers.[2]
